This is one of my favourite laksas and until recently, it was my top choice. Now it’s been replaced by Foody Goody laksa and you can read about it here.
Best Time laksa is my wife’s firm favourite and we used to go for family laksa breakfast (and still do but not as often now due to schedules) dates every week. She likes it because they don’t use any MSG (known locally as “Ajinomoto) and is kind to her IBS and other food sensitivities.
If you haven’t already noticed, I by default order the “special” version of any laksa I have . I want the best version; the biggest prawns and the biggest portion. Go big or go home type of mentality.
For RM12 for a special, you get a good sized bowl, with respectable sized prawns that are fresh and “crunchy”. I hate it when the prawns are soft and “melt” in your mouth because more often than not, that’s the sign that the prawns aren’t that fresh and may give you an upset stomach. Food poisoning isn’t fun although you do lose some weight.
Again the sauce is the most important, and this sauce is consistently flavourful. My wife likes it as it is not as sharp and spicy as some other stalls and is quite “smooth” but not overly “milky” and “creamy” as some laksas are. Especially those that go a little heavy with the coconut milk or “santan”.
It’s topped off with the usual egg omelette strips, beansprouts, fresh coriander and some chicken strips. Here I have to pay homage to my current favourite laksa; Foody Goody Special (RM18). The chicken in Best Time are torn into small strips which isn’t a bad thing, but I prefer the larger pieces of chicken in the Foody Goody laksa. Just has more substance to it, and for RM18 I guess, you’d expect a little more substance.
Finally, the “sambal” that a comes with the Best Time Cafe laksa isn’t half bad as well.
On a separate note, this entry is a little heavy on the parenthesis isn’t it?
Before I end this entry, let me say that I wish more laksa stalls accept eWallets and online payments. These days I rarely carry much cash and to be able to use Sarawak Pay or QRPay would make things a lot more convenient. Yes it’s a lot more hassle to setup and operate but it gives the customers added convenience. I am glad to see that Best Time Cafe accepts Sarawak Pay for the drinks. I wish it would for the food too.
I rate this laksa 4/5 and they are closed on Mondays. Here is their Google Maps location.
